Infant Observation Seminar

Led by Christine Norman, LCSW, of IPI SLC, this year-long seminar builds on the work of Esther Bick, of the British Psychoanalytic Society, and offers a unique opportunity to study pre-verbal states and early emotional development. Participants are encouraged to visit a family with an infant on a regular weekly basis for an hour, and to record afterwards what they have observed. These observations are then shared and discussed with the other seminar participants. The aim of the seminar is to explore the affective experience between infant and mother, patterns of communication, and the creation of personality. For clinicians, it provides the opportunity to hone observation skills and encounter the power of primitive emotional life. The seminar will begin in February of 2008 and will meet 22 times over the course of one year in two hour blocks. Participants from around the country are linked through a telephone conference. Dates and times will be finalized in January 2008.
