David Scharff, MD:
Sexuality and the Couple
(October 13, 2007)
CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION:
Issues of sex and sexuality are encountered more often in psychotherapy than most therapists feel comfortable with or know how to address. Even seasoned clinicians feel unskilled in dealing with sex and sexual themes in practice, and the specific strategies with which they can help their patients manage sexual problems may feel awkward or unfamiliar. How does a therapist, for example, create a safe psychological space in which sexual problems - which may be embarrassing for patients - can emerge? What are the best ways to conceptualize such problems? And, most importantly, what are the most effective techniques for correcting those problems and helping patients regain a satisfying sexual relationship? In this conference, David Scharff, a world-renowned psychoanalyst and expert in sex therapy, presented both theoretical and rich clinical material to answer these questions, particularly as they arise in couple therapy.
