Couple, Child and Family Therapy Institute
Footprints and Phantasies: Intergenerational Influences on Couples and Families
(July 6-11, 2009)
Chair: Janine Wanlass, Ph.D.
General Institute Description:
The Couple, Child and Family Therapy Institute is a 6-day intensive training institute offered by the International Psychotherapy Institute for students and clinicians in Utah and the Intermountain West. Each year, the Institute focuses on a unifying theme pertaining both to conceptualization and treatment of children, adolescents, couples and families.
Footprints and Phantasies: Intergenerational Influences on Couples and Families:
Each new generation carries the past experiences, unresolved psychic conflicts, internal representations, and reparative wishes of previous generations. A child bears the burden of unprocessed parental trauma. An immigrant mother envisions an idealized future for her daughter. A couple's conflict repeats the intimacy struggles of their own parents. Object relations theory provides a framework to understand the intrapsychic impact of these intergenerational patterns on ourselves as clinicians and the populations we treat. Grounded in theory and explored through clinical case vignettes, we will offer a variety of presentations for clinicians working with children, adolescents, couples, and families. Participants may select presentations focused on their population of interest or join us for an entire week of engaging clinical discussion. Although not required, we will provide opportunities for case consultation for interested participants.
